LOWER HUTT BOROUGH COUNCIL

A meeting of the Lower Hutt Borough Council was held last evening. Present: •Hie Mayor (Mr. W. T. Strand), and Councillors A.. J. Hobbs, A. Grierson, J. I ™eh L- T- W«u«'ls. T. G. Teaglo, E. Waldie, W. G. Meldrum, A. M'Bain, and E. \V. Hunt.

A bylaw was agreed to providing for the licensing of premises used in connection with the- manufacture or sale of food for human consumption. The 1 feu was fixed at ten shillings. 'lhe Mayor (Mr. W. T. Strand), who lias just returned from Sydney, thanked the Deputy-Mayor and councillors for the way they had carried out their duties. The balance-sheet, as presented showed a credit balance of £764 but such was not tho case, as moneys had been paid to loan accounts. In looking forward to the future, he said they would have to be very alert and careful. It was a great responsibility, as this district was to be remodelled, and would cj"' ry a b'g p&pulation. The mould should bo big enough to carry a largo city, and he a credit to nil. The Depu-ty-Mayor thanked the Mayor for his kind remavltß, and welcomed him back. anything. Tho result of tha year's transactions was very satisfactory. Mr. H. E l. Lowe was granted a subdivision to provide for a private en-tra-nco of ten feet. The Waimarie Croquet Club application for three lawns lor next season was referred to the Reserves Committee.

The Western Hutt Association asked that the debris from the Drill Hall should be cleared away; also that a light be placed at William and Tama streets. Tho Mayor moved -that the attention of the Defence Department be drawn to the matter of the debris, and that the Power Board be written to about the lioht. The motion was carried. °

The Western Hutt Association drew attention to the excessive speed of motorists on the new bitumen road. Councillor Watkins moved that the attention of the police .be drawn to the matter. The motion was carried.

lhu Mayor moved that competent men be engaged to conduct the motor traps, and that the borough solicitor conduct all prosecutions. Councillor Mitchell seconded the motion which was carried. The local sports bodies asked that a telephone be installed in the pavilion at, tho Recreation Ground. It was resolved that a telephone bo installed, providing the^ sports bodies pay half the amount. 'lhe. Hutt Progress Association wrote in regard to the inspection of buses and the overcrowding. The Mayor stated that arrangements had been made for the City Chief Inspector to inspect the buses this week.

Ihe Fire Prevention Committee reported that the official opening of tho new fire station and the. handing over to the brigade of the new fire engine takes place on the afternoon of Saturday, 6th June, when the brigade will give a demonstration in Myrtle street, and that the public be invited to attend. The Mayor moved that the principle of setting up committees be the same as that of the last two years. Councillor Hunt seconded. Councillor M'Bain moved that tho committees be limited to four. Councillor Meldrura seconded. Tho amendment was put and lost, and the motion carried.

Councillor Grierson was elepted the council's representative on the Petone Technical Board, and Councillor Mitchell on the Taita Cemetery Board. Permission was granted to the 'Rugby Union to charge lor admission to the Recreation Ground on tho next two Saturdays.

Councillor M-'Bain moved that the engineer inspect and report on the sewerage at the Hall-Jones Settlement at next meeting. Councillor Watkins seconded the motion, which was carried.

Councillor Teagle drew attention to tho state of Waterloo road, opposite Brassel's. The matter was referred to the engineer to attend to. Councillor Hunt, stated that the cycle track on Railway avenue was in a very bad state, and required attention.

A telephone is to be installed, in the homes of the Town Clerk and Engineer. The council decided to pay a visit of inspection of the borough on Saturday, 30th instant.
