The engineer was duly nominated.

The Petono Technical School asked that the time for closing the gates of the recreation ground be altered from 7 p.m. to 9.30 p.m. as a convenience for scholars leaving tho school. Councillor Jacobson seconded the motion. Councillor Edwards said that the Udy street gate should also be left open. Councillor Gallagher said unless restrictions were- made he would certainly be oppused to the gates being left open. The privilege would leave the way open tor use by undesirable characters.' Councillor Campbell moved as an amendment that all the gates be left open till 9.30 p.m. The amendment was defeated. A further amendment by Councillor Gallagher, . seconded by Councillor Sharpe, that the matter be referred to the Heserves Committee, was carried. In regard to the light, the engineer said arrangements had already been made for the provision of the lamp, but the Power Board was waiting for certain fittings., On the motion of Councillor Edwards, seconded by Councillor Scholefield, it was decided to support the action of the Runa'nga Borough Council in requesting the Government to make provision for the victims of infantile paralysis. The Reserves Committee reported that it recommended that, for the convenience of pedestrians, the steps oh the esplanade near the brick boat-shed be removed from the north side of the wall to the south side; that the Rugby Leagua be given fourteen days to meet its liabilities under the agreement, and, failing that, the lease be terminated. In respect to applications for tennis grounds, if the Ngaroma Croquet Club had been promised an extension of its ground eastward, the Central Bowling Club be granted ground for four courts west of the Ngaroma ground and north of the stopbank, and in respect to other applicants that an endeavour be made to accommodate them on the ground to be obtained from the Railway Department. In respect to an application from the Football Association, the committee recommended that the matter be held over until the new grounds were in playing order. Th,e council altered the recommendation regarding the Football League in the direction of giving the league SO days in which to show cause why the money had not been paid. In regard to the committee's recommendation regarding tennis, courts, it was decided, on the motion of Councillor Jacobson, to refer the whole question back to the committee with a request that the various applicants should be consulted. Other recommendations of tho committee wero agreed to.

The report from the Works Committeo was agreed to, Councillors Jay, Cook, and Brockelbank taking exception to tlie recommendation, to put Udy street through as soqti.as possible. The Works Committee was asked to submit a plau of the proposed route for Udy street extension to the next meeting of the council. The report stated;— . ■ "Your committee begs to recommend that the council make application to have Cuba street, north of Jackson street, treated with bitumen as soon as possible, and that an effort be made to lower the height of the ridge just south of the Emerson street intersection. Your committee recommends that ready mixed asphalt be used in future for footpaths, and that the engineer be requested to submit particulars of the •cost of a suitable mixer and dryer so that the work may be gone on with throughout the year. Regarding footpath crossings, the engineer advised that, from inquiries made, the actual cost of the suggested plate would be in the vicinity of 30s, which means that the cost of the crossing to the owner, including labour, would be approximate-' ly £3, and the committee recommends the adoption of this method. 'the committee recommends that the council take steps to put Udy street through as soon as possible."
