PLIGHT OF CYRENA

SERIOUS BUT NOT YET

HOPELESS

UNLOADING OPERATIONS

COMMENCED.

(BI 'XEtEGRAPH.—PKBSS ASSOCIATION 1.)

WANGANUI, This Day

The plight o£ the Cyrena. is serious, but is not as yet considered hopeless. The vessel has 14 feet of water in her holds, but the engine-room is dry. The weather is calm, and a start has been made to unload the case oil cargo. When that is completed an accurato survey of the damage will be possible, and it will be known whether tho vessel can be patched and towed off.

Tlie vessel first struck at a point where it was believed there was a clear three feet beneath tho hull, and the obstruction is surmised to be a sunken log. The initial injury was so serious that the steamer had to be beached to prevent her sinking in the fairway.

The Terawhiti has arrived, and is now standing by.
