In speaking to the motion he strongly urged that every effort should be mado t-o make a good showing at the South Seas Exhibition.
Councillor Nightingale seconded the motion and strongly supported the mover, whom he congratulated on the way he was taking up the matter. Councillor Nightingale said that to ensure success it must be seen that exhibits promised were collected. ]Iv agreed with Councillor Moffatt's remarks concerning the need for representation ill view of the railway agitation.
On the suggestion of the Mayor, the former resolution making a contribution of £150 conditionally was then rescinded.
The Mayor said it was of importance that Nelson should be well represented, but he considered that the council was being asked to contribute more than its fair share compared with what other local bodies had promised. Councillors Plum and Watson also spoke strongly in: support of the motion to contribute- £200 unconditionally.
As secretary of the Progress League, Councillor Neale was pleased with the way the proposal was being received, but agreed with' the Mayor that £150 was a fair share.
