NO PERMIT!
BOXINO BENEFIT HELD UP.
About a thousand "very disappointed boxing enthusiasts left Barlow's Gymnasium last evening, when it was announced that, owing,to the- necessary polico permit not having been obtained, the benefit display in aid of Jack Crowloy, an amateur, who was seriously injured in an accident, could not proceed. Tho hall was packed to its utmost capacity, and many patrons were unable to gain admission. The first contest was about to start when two police officers told the organiser that unless he could produce tlie necessary permit the function could not be staged. Endeavours were immediately made to get in.touch with the Inspector of Police, but finally the Superintendent, Mr. W. B. M'llveney. was approached.* He regretted that nothing could be done in the matter, as the only person who was competent to obtain the permit was the secretary of the Wellington Boxing Association, and oven then the permit c.oiiid only he given after the- necessary notice. Mr. George Aldridge. secretary of thn New Zealand Boxing Council, explained lo the Jaryuaudiencfi the unfortunate position which had arisen, and the crowd dispersed without much comment. When approached latin- in the evening, the organiser of tho benefit said Miul. the secretary of tlio Wellington Association had been asked to obtain the permit and he had also been requested to treat the matter as urgent. He, the organiser, was at a loss to understand wliy the permit had not. been secured. It'is understood that the benefit will be held in the near future in the Town Hall.
