CITY COUNCIL MEETING

■NELSON, 25th May. The Nelson City Council held its fortnightly meeting on Friday. All the councillors were present except Councillor Gibus, who i s away from Nelson.The Mayor, air. W. Lock, presided. _ Sir. Frank Jones resigned his position as head slaughterman at the abattoir. The resignation was accepted with regret, and Mr. Jones is to be granted four months' leave of absence on full pay.

Ihe Waimea Electric Supply Co. request for extension of the city supply beyond lahunanui was referred to a committee.

. Ihe Rugby Union requested the lighting of Irafalgar Park by electricity, and t-lie Rock Garden Society asked for a contribution of £25. Both applications were referred to tho committee. Ihe Regimental Band asked for the use of Irafalgar Park on Ist August for quickstep competition. The matter was referred to the committee, and sporting bodies are to be consulted as to a suitable date.

Ihe request of residents in Cambria street for formation of footpath will be attended_ to immediately. The Fire Brigade was granted a contribution of £100.

The committee of the whole council reported:—That a three-inch water main be piil jn in Miltou grove, together with the necessary hydrants; that the Nelson bowling Club be allowed the same reduction in rates as last year; that no action be taken in regard to the request ot residents of Tipahi street for improvements to the street; that, provided residents off Richardson street pay the cost of procuring and putting in tho pipes in the ditch, tho council contribute £60 towards the formation of the road; that tho City Engineer make inquiries and report as" to obtaining an improved grade as requested by residents in Queen's road and on Victoria Heights; Mr. A. Gascoigne was granted permission to plant a portion of Halifax street during the pleasure of the council; that Waimea road bo tar-sealed as soon as materials are available; that a committee consisting of the Mayor and Councillors Gibbs, Harley. Moffatt. and Stringer be appointed to confer with the Electrical -Engineer as to extension of electric plant; that the necessary pipe.? and hydrants"bo put in in the streets requiring same according to urgency. Tho City Engineer's report for the period ending £2nd May stated that Halifax street from Trafalgar street to Collhigwood street has been metalled. The footpath, Normandy Bridge, has been asphalted. General patching is being attended to. The path on tho west side of Vanguard street is being topdressed. The sewer extension for properties fronting St. Vincent street is in progress. The piping and filling-in of the ditch authorised in Kawai street has been done. Material is being got ready for . top-dressing Trafalgar Park out of loan. The children's playground, Maitai Bank, was opened on the 16th inst. Building permits were issued as follow:—New dwellings, one (£1062); repairs (dwellings), nine: (£400); business premises (new)j two (£790); business premises (repairs), nino (£533); Government buildings (new), one (£333): total £3118. The new water main in Cleveland road has been put in. The City Electrical Engineer reported that since his last report the reticulation poles have been erected on Victoria avenue and the rearrangement of the street lighting circuits commenced. The new lamps at Wakapuaka road and on Shakespeare Walk have been lighted, and the other new lamps will all bo lighted shortly.

Four tenders were received for the supply of electric meters. The lowest, that of K. P. Bailey and C 0.," of Wellington, ab £559, was accepted. The metres arc of British manufacture.

In reply to Councillor Moffatt, tiie Engineer said ho expected lo have the plans for tho new swimming baths ready in a. week. The Town Clerk said all the loan money required for tho baths had been received.

A resolution was carried, on the motion of Councillor Harlcy, that the dog inspector be instructed to take proceedings against all owners whose dogs are not licensed by Ist April.
