THE COLONISING SPIRIT.

LONDON, 20th May. Speaking at a West Australian dinner, Sir Burton Chadwick, M.P., discusring the need for peopling Australia, declared that he could not understand nieri devoting time, effort, and energy to trying to promote trade, not with Russia, with a group of adventurers calling_ themselves the Russian Soviet, when their own Empire was so.immeasurably better a market.
Mr. Collier, Premier of West Australia, responding, said he'regretted he must soon leave this land, now in such a lovely spring, garb; but some attention must be paid to' His Majesty's opposition, which was pretty virulent in West Australia. He recognised that West Australia- must have an'increasing flow of immigrants. The new . agreement, which was move generous'than its predecessor so far as West Australia was concerned, would enable it to resume immigration, which had been temporarily held up.. The chairman said he hoped the new agreement would result in increased migration, but lie felt that however many people were thus got, they would never complete the successful peopling of Australia without a revival in England of the old colonising spirit, which led men to go out through enterprise, self-sacri-fice, arid joy in building up a new country. .
