CATHOLIC EDUCATION

The Wellington. Catholic Education Board met last evening at St. Joseph's Hall, Buckle street/ His Grace Archbishop O'Shea presided, and the following members were . also present: Rev. Fathers Mahony, S.M., - Cullen, Maioney, S.M., and; Connolly,- Messrs. B. Poherty, J. -J. L.; Burke, P. D. Hoskins, j. Stratford, L. Carroll, J. Fagan, and J. Troy.

The .annual report and statement of accounts were adopted. The report disclosed a very successful year. The,result of the year's working resulted in adding £661 6s lid to the accumulated fund, which now stands at' £10 000 Bequests tb come, and donated-; shares, bring the amount up to over £15,000. The Sunday penny collections- totalled £689 6s 9d, the aggregate for 12 years being £8000. St. Patrick's Bay celebrations, Boxing Day picnic, and the annual social realised £336, the aggregate- from these .functions for the same period being over- £5000. ; The interest received from the- investments, of the accumulated fund ■ totalled £636. The total amount expended was £1429—£564 of which was spent for pupils . whose parents were unable to pay fees. The balance represents the cost of maintenance and upkeep of school buildings. The board expressed its gratitude to the trustees of the-Lissie Rathbone Estate, Waipawa, for a grant of. £50. In all cases most gratifying reports were re= ceived from the Government inspectors ?w S u°,°] s in r6Sal' d.to the efficiency of the children in secular subjects. "These reports" (states the report) "clearly demonstrate the claim of Catholics that the: spiritual training of the children in no way interferes with their efficiency in material studies; which is right up to the standard demanded by the Government; Gratitude is expressed to the religious-.teaching orders of the Sacred Heart, Sisters of Mercy, and the Harist Brothers, for the self-sacrificing work in staffing and conducting the schools " There are now 183 Catholic schools in : on-rJ? omini? n ' with an attendance of 20,749 pupils, who are taught by 587 mms and 39 Marist and- Christian Brothers. . In moving the adoption of the report his Grace Archbishop O'Shea congratulated the members of the'board on the success of the organisation, which he said, was one of the finest movement^ undertaken by the Catholic body He wished to place on record his appreciation of the services rendered by the officers of the board. ■ .
