LOWER HUTT COUNCIL

A meeting of the Lower Hutt Borough Council was held last evening. Present: The Mayor (Mr. W. T. Strand), Councillors A. J. Hobbe, E. W Hunt, L, T. Watkins, J. MitchelJ, D. A. Ewen, H. G. Teagle,: W. G. Meldrum, and A. M'BainThe Wellington Carnival -Aawciatjon wrote asking if the Hutt Valley would nominate a queen for the contest during Carnival Week, 19th to 26th January, 1924. It was decided not to undertake the responsibility. •' Permission was given to the Lower Hutt Plunket Society to use the Kecreation Ground on 23rd February. The Fire Underwriters' Association, wrote agreeing that the water mains in certain streets in the borough need not be altered from 3in to 4jn to comply with the requirements of the proposed fire prevention scheme.

A Jetter was received asking the counj cil to take steps to prevent motor speeding pn the Hutt rood, and also calling attention to the number of cyclists riding on the footpaths. Councillor Watting suggested that the borough solicitor should bs instruct, ed to ask for heavier fines, in endeavouring to put down the excessive speed of motorists, especially on Sundays.
