LOWER HUTT COUNCIL

A meeting of the Lower Hutt Borough Council was held last evening. Present: The Mayor (Mr. W. T. Strand), Councillors A. J. Hobbe, E. W Hunt, L, T. Watkins, J. MitchelJ, D. A. Ewen, H. G. Teagle,: W. G. Meldrum, and A. M'BainThe Wellington Carnival -Aawciatjon wrote asking if the Hutt Valley would nominate a queen for the contest during Carnival Week, 19th to 26th January, 1924. It was decided not to undertake the responsibility. •' Permission was given to the Lower Hutt Plunket Society to use the Kecreation Ground on 23rd February. The Fire Underwriters' Association, wrote agreeing that the water mains in certain streets in the borough need not be altered from 3in to 4jn to comply with the requirements of the proposed fire prevention scheme.

A Jetter was received asking the counj cil to take steps to prevent motor speeding pn the Hutt rood, and also calling attention to the number of cyclists riding on the footpaths. It was stated 'that^the."inspector had caught seven offenders on Sunday, and that they would appear before the Court, It was decided to refer the complaint to the police. The following staff holidays' iWere decided on :-~24th December to 10th' January, both dateg inclusive. The putsida staff holidays to be 24th, 26th, 26th, and 31st December, and Ist January, ■1924.' ..■....■

The engineer reported that building permits for the month were issued aa follow:—5 dwellings, value £3730; 1 outbuilding, £50; total, £3780." The librarian reported as follows:— Number of books taken out, 1756; *iew bcoks added, 18; new subscribers, 4;. members who withdrew, 3; total number of subscribers, 311, The inspector reported that on 3rd December six motorists were prosecuted and fined £3 and 3s costs for driving through the borough at an excessive speed. Several more motorists are summoned to appear at the Court next month for committing a similar offence. Councillor Watting suggested that the borough solicitor should bs instruct, ed to ask for heavier fines, in endeavouring to put down the excessive speed of motorists, especially on Sundays.
