PETONE COUNCIL.

The fortnightly meeting of the Petone Borough Council was held last evening Present: Mr. J. W. M'Ew-ap (MayorJ and Councillors C. P. Brockelbank A. C. Steffensen, V. Jacobson, R. H. Jones A. J. Pointop, H. Jay, W. Hay, -G Cook, and W. P. Coles.

The Petone Christmas Gala Commit, tee was granted the use of the foreshore and_ the Recreation Ground during Christmas week, and was also given permission to have stalls on the Esplanade. The council also agreed to refusa permits for any sideehows during th» week except tho6e under the control of the Carnival Committee. In this connection the council refused a permit for a merry-go-round to be erected on th« beach for the week prior to the carnival, but agreed to a permit for the week following the carnival at a rental of £20 per week. The dog tax was fixed at 10s and for sheepdogs at 3» 6d. TJJe T °wn.Clerk advised that.the sum of £4859 had been repaid by ratepayers who had.been assisted by the council to lay down their sewer connections. Altogether the amount of £6000 had been loaned for this purpose, and tha clerk did not anticipate that the council would lose any of the amounts. After a long discussion on the merits of the tar-sealed roads at preaent being laid down by the council, it was decided to defer for 'the present making experiments with bitumenIt was decided to draw the attention of the Gas Lighting Board to th« number of street lamps which had not been lighted for lengthy periods, and also tha attention of the Railway Department to unhghted lamps on the overhead bridge at the railway station. The Borough Engineer, Mr. A. Cowie, reported that the beach footpaths were being tarred and sanded; that Buick street North had been regraded, metalled, and tar sealed, and that Britannia street had received its second coat o! tar and sand. As soon as possible a. start would be made with tar-sealing the balance of the Hutt road between Udy street and Te Puni street.
