FINE WOOL

HIGH QUALITY FROM AUCKLAND DISTRICT,

(B? TELEGRAPH.— SPECIAL TO THE POST/*

AUCKLAND. This Day. - Four years ago a Canterbury sheep farmer, Mr. W. G. Rutherford, came to the conclusion that the climate in the north of New Zealand should be suitable for the production of fine wool similar to that exported from Australia. Mr. Rutherford came to Auckland and bought "Avdrossan," at Waiheke' Island. The place was then running Romney sheep. One of Mr. Rutherford's first steps was to purchase twelve merino rams to cross with Romney ewes. The result is that to-day the bulk of the flock on the run are halfbreed. Evidence of the high quality of the wool produced is shown by the fact that at the sale last season Mr. Rutherford's clip realised the top figure of 21£ d per pound. At the sale last Saturday Mr. Rutherford's wool again topped the market, the figure this time being 24i<l per pound.- For a flock of 1500, including hoggets, the fleece averaged 741b weight.
