Messrs. Ellis and Manton, who hold a lease of land in Jackson street from the council, with a right of renewal, notified the firm's intention of taking a renewal for a further term of seven years at £50 per annum.

• A request for the consent of the council to the exemption of a portion of the western end of Wakefleld street on the southern Sid's from the street-widening clause of the Publio Works Act, on condition that the building line was set back 33ft from the centre of the road, was referred to the borough solicitor for an opinion. It was pointed out that, though Wakefield street is on the boundary of the Lower Hutt and Petone boroughs, the whole of the street lies within the former borough. The Town Clerk was instructed to pay over, as a grant to the Taita Cemetery Board, the sum of £50 aa provided on the estimates.

The borouph foreman recommended that the works of the town clock should bo lowered twenty feet to enable them to be placed on a solid base. The engineer was instructed to report upon the question. After considerable discussion on the question, the borough inspector was given fuller- powers to deal effectively with the wandering stock and dog nuisances.

In view of the forthcoming carnival, the engineer was instructed, without interfering with the work on the streets and footpaths, to level off as much as possible of the land along the foreshore.

The carnival committee was granted permission to use the vacant borough land at the eastern end of the foreshore for the erection of tents to hire to visitors durinK the summer months.

The engineer stated that his report on the creekt diversion scheme would he placed before the next meeting of the Works Committee.
