LOWER HUTT COUNCIL
A meeting of the Lower Hutt Borough Council was held last evening. Present: The Mayor (Mr. W. T. Strand), Councillors A. J. Hobbs, L. T. Watkins D. A. Ewen, E. W. Hunt, W. G. Meldrum, H. J. Teagle, A. M'Bain, A. F. Roberts. An apology was received from Councillor Mitchell.
The Department of Health wrote recommending the council to institute a yearly "clean-up" day or week. The inspector reported that there was no need for a "clean-up" week, as the. weekly collection of rubbish met the case.
The council approved the plan of land to be transferred from Mr. T. "W. Strand to the Rugby Union. It was decided that in future no plans for subdivision or exemptions be placed before the council until considered by the Works Committee.
Some discussion ensued regarding the purchase of a billiard table to be installed in the new fire station, and the matter was referred to the Finance Committee.
The engineer reported that' the bridging across the gap on Normandale road gave way at the end of last week. Strong- temporary repairs had been effected, but tHe whole structure was In a very bad condition, many of the timbers had cracked, and permanent concrete work would have to be put in before next winter. A culvert on Wainui Hill road also collapsed, the timbers having rotted away, and most of the culvert had to be renewed.
v The inspector reported that during tho month two cases of infectious disease were reported, one of scarlet fever, and one of erysipelas.
It was decided to pay the Hutt Municipal Band a subsidy of £25.
