NOTES

A Moascar Cup match between the New Plymouth High School and the Auckland Grammar School (holders) is to be played at Auckland next Saturday as a curtain-raiser to the Auckland-Tara-naki. match.

The North Island selectors found themselves short of a back yesterday, owing to Lucas being unable to replace Wright. It was considered that an extra halfback was necessary—two had been originally chosen, and Wright had dropped out—and on that account Hall (Pon'eke) was in hick's way. H. E. Nicholls was suffering from an injury received in the Wellington-Hawke's Bay match, and E. Roberts was in the Wellington team to play_ Wairarapa. Richardson, one o£ the ' Dominion's best forwards, who. was to captain .the South Island team to-day, and who recently had an attack or influenza, has had another stroke of bad luck. One of his ribs is broken. Q. Donald, who has been out of luck when teams have been chosen for big matches in i'ocent yearjd had to take a position as emergency for the North Island team to-day. He is just getting over an attack of. influenza. P. W. Storey, the well-known South Canterbury and ex-New Zealand wing three-quarter, whose omission from the South Island team this year came as a surprise, is reported to be suffering from congestion of the lungs. The Wellington junior representatives,' who were to play in.Nelson to-day, took the opportunity before leaving by the' boat on Thursday night of showing (heir appreciation of the efforts of tli6 Junior Advisory Committee in looking after the interests of the junior players. The representatives gave three cheers for the Junior Committee. Mr. A. Lindsay is acting as manager of the junior representative team in place of Mr. T. Thompson, who was unable to make'the trip. Svenson and "Doc" Nieholls were unable to play for Wellington to-day, as they were suffering from influenza. Mark Nicholls was also reported to be unlit, for play. Watson, a Berhampore forward, who was injured in a match a few weeks ago; is still in hospital. His condition was such as to necessitate an operation to his head this. week.

It is understood that some of the players who were in the Wellington team which went to Hawkes Bay, and who were in the original selection for today's match with' Wairarapa, will he unable to go on the Northern tour to be made by the Wellington A representatives.

Hawkes Bay's next match wilFbe"with Poverty Bay, on Saturday next. If Hawkes Bay win Canterbury will endeavour to lift the Ranfurly Shield on Wednesday week. Auckland and Southland have not entered a challenge for the shield this season.

"It has always been the policy of the Wellington • Rugby Union "to lend a helping hand to the smaller unions. That their efforts are appreciated is shown by-the undoubted popularity of their representatives wherever they appear throughout the Dominion.
