An Order-iu-Council states that the coasts of the Ross Sea, with the adjacent islands and territories, aro a British settlement within the meaning of the British Settlemnet Act, 1887, and shall in future be administered by New Zealand vested in the Governor-General, and by order of the King named the Ross De« pendency.
The Ross Sea is a gulf in (ho Antarctic continent. It is approximately 600 miles from north to south, and 400* miles in width, and lies almost directly south of New Zealand. Its southern boundary tiffords the nearest approach by sea to the South Pule, hence the frequency with which its shores have been Used as bases for expeditions. On the east shore is King Edward VII. Land, and oil the west, Victoria Land; and in the southwest corner is the small island bearing Mt.-Erebus and Mt. Terror. This is separated from Victoria Land by M'Murdo. Sound, along which Scott, Shackleton, and Amundsen proceeded on their polar expeditions. Shackletou, in 1909. located the south magnetic pole in Victoria Land, about 200 miles west of the Ross Sea and 400 miles south of the coast of the continent. From having beeti so hiuch Used by explorers, the neighbourhood of the Ross Sea is the most completely explored area in the Antarctic.
