FLOWER ADMIRERS

ANNUAL MEETING OF SOCIETY

THE FINANCIAL POSITION.

There was an attendance of some 60. members at the annual meeting of the Wellington Horticultural Society on Wednesday evening. Mr. J. B. Harcourt presided.

Discussing the annual report, details of which have appeared in "The Post," the chairman stated that the society was to be congratulated on the two good shows during the past year. At each, of these the flowers shown had i been o£ a high standard of excellence. The society's financial position, owing to the many outstanding subscriptions and special donations not collected, was 1 not satisfactory. This had been contributed to by the resignation of officials during the year. Notwithstanding this, the society appeared to be in for a good season, and with more attention to the finances everything would bo all right. He recommended the holding of a chrysanthemum show in the autumn, if such a show could be made self-sup-porting. Mr. W. J. Thompson pointed out that though the shows were good they were not getting the support of the public. Endeavours should be made to get every flower lover in the district interested. If they were not successful they must let the society go out of existence, which would be a disaster after operations extending over 22 years. .

Several members suggested methods of improving the finances, and considered that now the suburban societies were coining in, the s ensuing season should be the best in the history of the society.

The election of officers resulted as follows:—Patron and patroness, Their Excellencies the Governor-General and Viscountess Jellicoe; president, Mr. J. B. Harcourt; vice-presidents, Lady Luke, Mrs. (Dr.) Hislop. Mesdames A. E. Pearce, H. M. Gore, C. G. Vallance, G. Johnson, S. Kirkcaldie, Knox Gilmer, Misses E. M. Joseph, Marchant, Messrs.-C. W. Griffiths; ladies' committee, convenor,, Mrs. Gore. Subscriptions for the ensuing year were fixed as follow: Single member, ss; three members, 10s; family membership, £1.

The City Council is to be approached to allow members free entrance to the Zoo on the occasion of the society's annual rose-pruning display.

It was decided that a general meeting be held in six months to review the financial position with a view to putting on a chrysanthemum show.
