DISORGANISED TELEGRAPH LINES

The .main telesraph lines in the South Island, from Christchurch North to Marlborough, are disorganised in the vicinity of the Clarence River. In order that there should bo as little delay as possible in repairing the damage, the Chief Telegraph Engineer, Mr. C. A. Shrimpton, left for Marlborough to-day to personally supervise the work. The Telegraph Department, however, was able to report to-day that communication with Christchurch was practically normal. Messages are coming to the North Island via Greymouth, Tophouse, and Blenheim. Before he left for the South, Mr. Shrimpton connected with this line the quadruple duplex printing machine which is dealing with messages at the rate of 400 per hour.
