THE WOOL SITUATION

(UNHID FREES ASSOCIATION.—COPIWWT.)

(AUSTRALIAN . NEW ZEALAND CABIS ASSOCIATION,)

LONDON, 7th May. At the wool sales merinos were fully firm. Fine and medium crossbreds were unchanged, but low crossbreds were a shade easier. Tlie Kilcumvnm clip brought up to 31d per lb, and averaged 28£ d; Eskdale, 30^d; Cuba, highest price 32^d, average 30d; Strathdarr, 55d and 53d.

' Bradford topmakers' quotations 'are firm, but unchanged. Actual business is stagnant.

The Trade Specialist of the "Bradford Daily Telegraph" wrote, during the progress of the March London series: "Some of the very cream of the clips grown in New Zealand have been submitted, really superior wools, showing excellent quality and character. For instance, Motuotaria touched 22d in the grease, or 36d clean for the best lot of half-bred, which was really good spinners' 56's to 58's wools. The fine crossbred (spinneris' 56's) made 20id to 22£ dor 30d clean, and) 50's made 16£ dor 23d clean, nearly every lot going to the home trade. During the week further, excellent Now Zealand wools have been catalogued, the Marshlands clip being all that one could desire. The fine comeback touched 25£ d, and even the second comeback made 23gd. Of course, these are superior crossbreds, and they work out at 37d clean for the top lines of 56's to 58's; the 56's will cost 34d, and the super 50's 24d to 25d. Other excellent clips, Touroa, Morea, Kopangi, and Tokomaru. It is very significant that the home trade has been by far the biggest buyer of these wools, assimilating fully 75 per cent, of the offerings, France coming next, and America a good third. Almost every day there has been a big offering of sliped crossbreds, and these have met with considerable support, but at less prices than in January. ..We see no longer up to 28d paid for sliped half bred lambs, and 24d to 25d is a more regular price, an exceptional lot touching Id more. Scoured also are mostly 7^d per cent, below January, but the fact is remarkable ' that the catalogues are cleared daily."
