(Received 9th May, 8 a.m.)
PARIS, Bth May. The celebrated Spanish matador Mendez was gored and dreadfully injured during the first bull-fight of the seaeon at Bordeaux. He fought three bulls. He placed a pair of banderillos in the first, when the bull charged him, and knocked him back to the ground. He was not seriously hurt, and proceeded to dispatch the bull. Then he fought and killed the second, amdd the great enthusiasm of the crowd over his almost reckless daring. He faced the third bull, of which he had previously expressed fear. The bull charged forthwith, and tossed Mendez, who just managed to clamber to safety, when he fainted. He was gashed in the abdomen, and internal hemorrhage .severed an artery. An immediate operation was performed at the hospital, where Mendez refused any anaesthetic. His condition is critical.
