CAPPING DAY DISPLAYS
TO- THE EDITOR.
Sir,—ln your issue of the 24th ultimo, you published a cable from Hobart in which the Lieutenant-Governor, Sir Herbert Nicoll, was "cried, down" by the university students when he arose to address them, and Sir Herbert's immediate and drastic action will give the offenders something to remember and long to be ashamed of. Capping Day in Wellington cannot be. very far off, and it is to be hoped iiat the students, will not be allowed to take control of the city in the same manner as they did last year. It was simply abominable the way the majority of the students conducted themselves, and why they should be allowed to assault young women by kisaing and caressing them is beyond my comprehension. If any other person was to take such liberties he would without any hesitation be arrested and would probably receive three months without the option; then why should not the students receive the same treatment ? I like sport, good clean sport, and am with them every time to help it along; but I am right up against such conduct as the university students >are allowed to carry out on Capping Day.— I am, etc., CLEAN SPORT. 7th May.;
