AN APPRECIATION

10 THE EDIIOE.

Sir,—-It is so seldom that th,e manner in which the police discharge their varied duties is sufficiently recognised by those whom they serve, that I shall be grateful if you will let me express, through your paper, the deep sense of obligation to them Jwhich is felt by all those connected with the Young 'Women's Christian Association, who experienced their kindly help on the night of the fire at the hostel in.Macdonald crescent. . ,

The staff and members of the board, who gathered there while the Fire Brigade were at work, had a very anxious time—especially when it was first feared, and. then known for certain, that a lifs bad been lost. During those trying hours, when only one or'two other men were present, the courtesy and the consideration of the police towards those anxious womenfolk . were beyond all praise. These things will remain in their memories as a relief to the sad recollections of that night. . They have asked me, as one who was there, and who shares their feeling of appreciation and admiration, to say that they are deeply grateful to the sergeant and his men, and that Inspector M'llveney his reason to be proud of his command. They desire, also, to express their sense of gratitude to the members of the ijre .Brigade and their . Superintendent.' Besides showing efficiency :'in, -their work, Mr. Tait and his firemen, were kind and helpful in the extreme.—l am etc., ' .. ■ , T. E. CORKILL. j „ Bth May. ■.'■'.■
