MAGISTRATE'S COURT

Mr. E. Page, S.M., presided at the Magistrate's Court to-day. One first-offender for drunkenness was fined 5s in default 24 hours, while another similar offender, who did not appear, was ordered to forfeit the amount of his bail, 10s. Allan Raymond George was fined 10s, in default 48 hours' imprisonment, for drunkenness, and £1, in default three days' imprisonment, for committing a breach of his prohibition order. For insobriety, Patrick O'Callaghan was fined £1 in default three days' imprisonment, and 30s in default three days' imprisonment for commiting a breach of his prohibition order. William Lee. with two previous convictions for drunkenness, was fined £1 in default three days' imprisonment, and Francis Stanley Havtnette, who had been drunk while in charge of a horse and cart, was fined £2 in default seven days' imprisonment. Jabez WookJridge, with four previous convictions, was fined £2 in default seven days' imprisonment. Senior-Sergeant Lander suggested that the accused should be sent to "The Island," but the- Magistrate decided to give him another chance.

Leslie Charles Thackwell was remanded to appear at Palmerston North on this day week on a charge of stealing papers and magazines to the value of £7 18s, and Welham Sydney Taylor, charged with the theft of six table knives valued at £1, the property of Vera Glaister, was remanded to appear at Dunedin on Thursday. The accused was arrested by Detective Sinclair.
