FIRE ON LAMBTON QUAY

An outbreak of fir© occurred last night about 5.40 o'clock at the shop occupied by Mr. Bruce Howe, tailor's outfitter, at the corner of Woodward street and Lambton quay. Constable M'Nutt, who was on duty in the vicinity, noticed smoke coming from the sides of the shop, and gave the alarm from the Police Station. The brigade suppressed the fire in a very short time, but the stock was badly damaged. The building, which was owned by the- United Ancient Order of Druids, was insured in the Norwich Union Office for £3510 and the stock in the United Insurance Office for £1250. The occupier left the premises about 5.30 p.m., when apparently everything was safe. It is understood that it was the intention of the owners to pull down the building and erect a six-story structure when the current leases expired at the end of the year. Plans had been prepared and approved.
