STREET COLLECTIONS

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —Collecting in the ■ streets is not nice from any point of view, least of all from' the collector's. Duty, humanitarian impulse, are responsible for the propulsion of women on to the streets with collecting-boxes. Some needy causes are more worthy of support than others. Most streetfarers have little to give these days, and need for discrimination arises. Sir, the field day undertaken by various , humanitarian bodies organised for to-morrow (Friday) in . aid of the kindergarten schools of Wellington, is ■most worthy of support. For realisation of this one has only to visit the school in Taranaki street between the hours of 9.30 a.m. and noon, and note the good work done among the dozens of tiny mites. And incidentally hear some harrowing stories. Do many of your readers, I wonder, Sir, know of the sufferings and privations of the little children round certain unholy! quarters of this city ? " Might I through your paper beseech housewives to visit the various stalls in the streets to-morrow, when making their week-end purchases; :thus furthering the good work of helping dear little mites to a few hours' brightness.—l am, etc., ■ ONE OF THE COLLECTORS. Bth March, 1923.
