- It was decided at the meeting of the Wellington "Centre of the .New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association last evening to award £1 to Mr. Johnson, gatekeeper at Athletic Park, in connection with his recovery of £10 at a recent sports gathering.

Motions of condolence were .passed at the annual meeting of the New Zealand Institute concerning the deaths of Mr. Percy Smith, New Plymouth; Professor F. D. Brown, Auckland; and Drs. D. Sharp, F.R.S., and Bruce, of England. The president, Professor Kirk, said each had left behind a memorial in his works, and no man could do better.

The Board '. of Governors of Canterbury College has appointed Mr.. T. M. Shaiiahan, 8.E., B,Sc.~(Sydney), as senior demonstrator in electrical engineering at the school of .engineering, and Mr: J.'•&.' Pennington, B.E. Dr. Eric Luke, of Wellington who ig now on his way back to New • Zealand, is spending a few weeks at Dr. Mayo's clinis at Rochester, U.S.A., ..'en route. Since qualifying as F.R.C.S. (Ed.) in October last^ T)t. Luke has been gaining further experience in various British hospitals, including the famous Rotunda Hospital, at Dublin. Dr. Luke, will return to New Zealand after spending some further time in America. , |

The funei-al of the late Sapper Edward . Scanlcm Dennehy, who saw service at the Dardanelles and in France with the New Zealand Machine Gun Corps and No. 1 Field Company, ■ New Zealand Engineers, N.Z.E.F., took place to-day. Requiem .Mass, was celebrated at St. Mary of the Angels' Church, Boulcott street, at 9 a.m., the cortege leaving for Karori Cemetery at 9,30: a.m. Amongst; those present at the graveside were Lieutenant Clifton, representing the General Officer Commanding New Zealand Military Forces, the . Mayor (Mr. R. A. Wright) representing the citizens of Wellington, Sir. John. Luke, M.P., Colonel Fletcher, Major 1 C. W. Salmon; and representatives .of the Returned Soldiers' Association, Commercial Travellers' Association, Chamber of Commerca, and the Women's National' Reserve.

Advice was received in Dunedin last week of the sudden death of Dr. W. S. Alexander, Magistrate and medical officer at the Chatham Islands. Doceased was a native of Londonderry, Ireland, and graduated at Trinity College, Dublin. He practised for some years in London, but then went to South Africa, ■where he served in the Boer War. After another period of residence in Eng!and he returned to South Africa and carried on the practice of his profession for several years in Hhodesia, where >c was at the, time of the outbreak of the Great War, in which he served with tbe colonial forces in the African -:&rapaigii. Having come to New Zealand for health reasons in 1921, Dr. Alexander practised at Pembroke for about a yeaT prior to his appointment to Chatham Islands, where he had lived , for only about a month.when he passed away. He leaves a wife and one daughter to mourn their loss. Dr. Alexander was a man of .attractive personality and of a very kindly disposition.
