RHENISH EVENTS
UPSET BALANCE OF POWER
DEEPLY AFFECTING ITALY.
(Reoeiv«d 30th January, noon.)
ROME, 29th January. Mussolini's organ, "II Popolo d'ltalia," says: "The Rhenish events are no longer a circumscribed or isolated episode, put a general political struggle of the first magnitude is likely owing to the drastic repressions by French bayonets, machine»guns, and tanks inside the new frontier. Paris henceforth must be obeyed, and not Berlin. This implies a change in the Continental balance of power, deeply affecting Italy, which consequently . cannot play a passive role. Italy has been cautiouely neutral, but cannot pursue a sentimental policy, should her interests be carelessly considered or trampled on."
