MAGISTRATE'S COURT
Mr. E. Page, S.M., presided at the Magistrate's Court yesterday when police and maintenance cases were heard.
One first offender for drunkenness was fined ss, in default twenty-four hours' imprisonment, and two others,, who did not appear, were ordered to forfeit the amounts of their bail,' 10s in each instance. Phillip Slattery Corliss, with one previous conviction for insobriety, was fined 10s, in default 48 hours' imprisonment. \,
A young man named Herbert Edward King was remanded for sentence until Friday on a charge of stealing a £10 note, the property of Elizabeth Fitzgerald. According to Senior-Detective Lewis, the accused, who was arrested by Detective Cooper,' had been boarding with the complainant slid had stolen the money, which was the property of her sons.
When the name of Walter Leslie Bennett was called, a young man stepped into the dock and pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing a gold watch and chain and a Kruger halfsovereign, valued at £8 7a 6d, the property of Frederick Ruddlesden. Senior-Detective Lewis said that according to the accused he had stolen the property from hi* brother-in-law's house for the purpose of irritating his relative. Unfortunately, he had gone a step further, and had disposed of the watch and chain to a second-hand dealer for £1 sb. The accused was a returned soldier, a married man, and was in receipt of a pension. Detective Cooper was responsible for the arrest. The Magistrate admitted Bennett to probation for twelve months and ordered that the Bum of £1 56 be paid the secondhand dealer within one month..
