LEAGUE

NOTES AND COMMENTS

(By "Half-Back.")

A gojH medal, presented by Mr. W. Piece*,' of Auckland, for the best allround player in the Maori League team that recently visited Australia, has'been awarded to Te Whata, of Tokomarn Bay.

The New South Wales team, under the management of Messrs. Flegg and Scholfield, expects to arrive in Wellington by the Uliffiaroa on the 13th September, and will proceed to Auckland the next day by the Main Trunk. As this is the first port of call of the team in the Dominionj the question of a suitable reception was discussed at Monday night's meeting of the Management Committee of the Wellington Rugby League, and definite arrangements were made. A match, Kangaroos y. Australasia, is pencilled to be played in Wellington in the early part of October., The Kangaroos are the team which toured to Knglanri last season, and playing against Australasia, the game should be the finest exposition of the 13 a-side code seen in this country. The New South Wales team was at first desirioug of playing a match in Wellington on 13th September, but on account of the probable late arrival of the steamer, and the disappointing of. the public if the match were not played, the first match will Be' against the King Country League at Taumarunui. Vi King played a rattling good game for City seniors against Central on Saturday at Emeiaon street. He is fast, handles the ball well, and tackles well. He should be heard of in bigger football in the near future.

Dan Foley played a good game for Central. His tries,,, were pretty; but both were scored in' the corner. Foley is inclined to play too near the line—rather a bad fault of his.

A visitor from the West Coast states that Lea&ue is booming there. In Grey-\ mouthy they have senior, junior, third) and fourth grade teams, and prospects for the eominj season, states the visitor, are very bright It was decided at the last meeting of the Management Committee of the Wellington Rugby League that arrangements be made for the visit of a Wellington team to .the Coast 1 towards the end of September. The junior and third-grade round of fixtures are being continued to-day; but the seniors are playing a Town v. Country match at Newtown Park. «ext Wednesday the local representatives will play the South Auckland touring team at Palmerston North. South Auckland then go on to play Canterbury next Saturday. Mr. C. T. White, secretary Wellington Rugby League, > is managing the local team on iti tour to Palmerston -North. It has been decided that arrangements be made for a curtain-raiser, Hawkes Bay junior representatives y. Wellington junior representative*, to be played at Palmerston North to, the South Auckland v. Wellington match on Wednesday. The senior games of the season, so far as dub matches are concerned, are now finished, and the standard of play has greatly improved upon that of previous years. The town teams have put up a much better showing against;,Petone this year than formerly, ; and next year the suburban team should not have quite so much advantage over other teams as it has had in the past. The senior competition will be strengthened by at least two new teams next season, which should make', the championship matches very interesting. The players all deserve' credit for the clean and sportsmanlike manner in which they have played the , game, and on no occasion throughout the | season has a player been disqualified for j any breach. Let us hope we may ' "carry-on" in such a way for many a long day. ' '
