CITY COUNCIL BYELECTION

TO THB HDITOK. Sir,—l understand that the election of a councillor to the Wellington City Council is for. nine months only, and that a contested election will cost some. £500. I submit that the circumstances do not justify this largo expenditure at a time when' every penny is required for the efficient managemnt of the city and for labour for those who unfortuntely are unemployed, and that some method of avoiding this large and useless expenditure can be devised if all parties are for the good .of the city. I am .not now concerned with the election of any individual. lam of opinion that the requiremen te of the occasion will be met by (1) the proposed candidates drawing, lots a 6 to -who, shall be nominated and acting accordingly; (2) confining nominations by agreement to the highest unsuccessful candidate in the last poll, or (3) the services of a trusted arbiter might settle the difficulty. I fancy the public will in future look askance at any person who, for personal reasons, disregards so obvious a method of assisting the city finances. What say you, Mr. Editor?—l am, etc, WATCHFUL CITIZEN. 10th July.
