Crown Law Office advised thai the term,, "persons" in the Justices of the Peac«r Act did not include in its meaning; "women." 'Personally, Mr. Wilford believes that the term does include women in its meaning, but to overcome the diffiiculty ho yesterday introduced in the House of Representatives an amending Bill having for its object the removal of the disability on women. In introducing; the Bill, he spoke of tho success achieved by women Justices of the Peace in Britain. Tho appointment of women justices T(U ■ ceived the support of Dr. H. T. J.. Thacker (Christchurch East) and1 Messrs.. J. M'Combs (Lyttelton) and R. • A.Wright (Wellington Suburbs), but Mr. •M'Combs added that the amcnding^Bitt was unnecessary—the Minister had -'the; ipower to appoint women if ho desired "to do so. ' The Bill was read a first time.
