Wishing to increase the facilities afforded New Zealand students to make themselves acquainted with French culture in its various branches, the French Government recently decided to make an important.gift of-books,.;so .certain libraries, in New Zealand, especially those of the University Colleges of Auckland, Wellington, Canterbury, and Otago, some of the free public libraries, and the French Clubs of Auckland, Wellington, and Dunedin.

These various gifts include numerous works by the best authors on literature, science, art, history, jsiulosophy, political economy, sociology', etc; books on the Great War, some of them written by the great military authorities on thej conduct of operations, encyclopedias, reference books, etc. These works will enable their readers to obtain an exact idea of the intellectual and literary movement in France, especially during the last fifty years.

The cases containing these collections, weighing from 200 to 4001b each, have just reached New Zealand, and iave been handed over to the libraries above indicated, by the French Consul and the consular agents in the four large cities. They have been received with appreciation in all quarters, not only as a valuable addition to the French section of the libraries, but also as a fresh proof that France views with the greatest interest the development of her friendly and intellectual relations witlj New Zealand.
