WORK FOR UNEMPLOYED

EX-SOLDIERS,

The following letter was sent by the Wellington Returned Soldiers' Association to the Mayor <of Wellington on the 16th instant:—"Dear sir, —The Poppy Day Fund Committee met at Palmerston North last evening, and allocated the sum of £1212 19s 2d to Wellington Metropolitan Area under the following conditions : —'The money to be used only for wages of unemployed returned soldiers for actual work done, such work to be of a public character, and spent through those local bodies and other institutions .willing to subsidise the amount £1 for £1, and that standard rates.of wages be paid.' Of the above amount, between £1000 and £1100 vvill be available to be spent in the city. I am directed to ask if your council is willing to accept the money, and fulfil the conditions laid down by the Poppy Day Fund Committee. Failing your acceptance of this offer, my executive is directed to offer the money to other bodies under similar conditions. My executive wish to impress upon you the urgency of immediate action. They desire to see some of the 'men given work at the beginning of next week. We would, therefore, ask that you be good enough to consult with your council and let us have an immediate reply.—Yours faithfully, (Signed) G.
