HIGH TRAM FARES
REDUCTION ON CONCESSION TICKETS 'URGED.
The question of effecting reductions in tram fares in view of .the surplus produced on the tramway system during the past financial year, has been brought ""^f. not«e of the City Council by the Wellington Trades and Labour Counci. The letter from the Trades Council contained the following resolution':— "
That in view of, the surplus revenue accruing from the tramway service, the Wellington Trades and Labour Council protests against the high fares at present being charged on the city trams and respectfully suggests that the City Council should review the matter of concession tickets, so that the workers at least, who are now faced with falling wages and intermittent employment, should be allowed jto benefit thereby instead of accumulating an abnormal .surplus. i 1
In reference to the tramways, it was 'Sffi °m J\ y' the May°r <Mr' »■ A. Wright, M.P.) a t the last meeting of the Uty Council that, in the course of its investigations, the Tramways: Committee had discovered that the tramway undertaking was sadly handicapped for ack of capital,*.notwithstanding that it had had a great deal of capital. The undertaking also had a big overdraft at the bank, and while a profit was made last year it had to be borne in mind that that profit could not be given away until the tramway concern was placed upon a solid basis. He thought that in the near future an effort would bo made to give the public.the benefit of a reduction in fares. . '■'.'"'
The representations of the Trades and Labour Council will probably come before the, City Council for consideration at its next meeting. .' i ■
