The Hon. D. H. Guthrie, Minister {>f Lands returned to Wellington from a visit to the South this morning.

Widdowson, who leaves Dunedin next week to take up the position of Senior Magistrate at Christchurch, was farewelled by the South Dunedin Licensing Committee, and presented with a smoker's outfit. Handover, M.A., who was some time curate »t All Saints', Pahnerston North, and St. Peter's, Wellington, x and for the last few years has been fellows' chaplain of Magdalen College, and chaplain of Christ Church, Oxford, has been appointed rector of Leon Acton, Bristol. Mr. T. W. Rapley, who was manager for the South Island of the. Australian Provincial Assurance Association, has been appointed general manager for the whole of New Zealand; Mr. Rapley entered the Government Service and eventually became postmaster at Stratford, where, amongst other things, he was connected with the Government Life Assurance Department. Leaving the Government Service he became district manager of the Equitable Life, and afterwards was associated with the National Mutual Life.

Appreciation of the services of Mr. R. E. Hayes, formerly Registrar of Friendly Societies, and now Assistant Secretary to the Treasury, was expressed at last night's meeting of the executive of the Wellington District Ancient Order of Foresters. The following motion was carried unanimously:—"We heartily congratulate Mr. R. E. Hayes on his promotion to the position of Assistant Secretary to the Treasury, and desire to express our sincere appreciation of his past services as Registrar of Friendly Societies. While never at any time unmindful of his duties as Registrar, he was always sympathetic towards the societies, and Warmly interested in their welfare, and by his readiness to confer with and Kindly advice to the leaders of the friendly societies' movement he materially assisted in aubatsntiaUy improving the portion of Utfl v>Attm,"~
