OARSMEN'S DAY

.WELLINGTON REGATTA

HELD ON THE PET ONE COURSE

-The annual regatta of the Wellington Amateur Rowing Association was held at Petona to-day in fine -feather. The main harbour course off Oriental Bay 'was found to be* unfavourable this morning, on account of the wind having veered round to' the north overnight, and to avoid the possihlity of boats being swamped the officials were compelled to change the venue of the regatta to the northern end of the harbour, where the Ngahauranga-Kbro Kord course is more suitable in northerly weather.' From the point of view of the Association, the necessary alteration was unfortunate, as the town course wn|. far more convenient for spectators. The rowing, ■■' however, attracted a fair number of | visitors, and some interesting races j were witnessed throughout the day. | Oarsmen from all parts of the Dominion , were present, the entries for most events -being good. The Union Boating Club ; (Wangariui) had a strong contingent, Trhich included A. Sharpe, holder of the Pearce Challenge Cup (senior sculls), and N. W. Smith, holder of the Bridson i Challenge Cup (junior sculls). The in- ■' elusion of the former in the senior fours made an improvement on the club's crew, which has won the champion fours for two successive years. Local clubs were well represented, as also were Canterbury, Picton,.Wangariui, Wairau, and West End (Auckland). ! The youths' four from the last-named club were, however, very unfortunate, inasmuch as their new boat built for them locally was found to be rigged oh the wrong side. It was decided, however, to change the positions of the crew and use the boat. The Canterbury junior crew was unable to compete on account of Ithe illness of one of its members. There was a delay in starting, owing to the late arrival of the boat tram. Officials for the. day were as follow:— Judges: Messrs. A. T>. Bayfield, ,F. Mothes, E. W. M'Villv; umpire: Mr. B.
