On Monday evening Mr. P. J. Hopkins, of Wellington, accompanied by Mr. M'Pherson, arrived in Palmerston North by motor from Wellington after an adventurous passage of the flooded area between Shannon and Makerua (says the Manawatu Daily Times). The floods, which covered about two . and a-half miles of the main road, were thought to be impassable, but' notwithstanding many warnings Mr. Hopkins determined to make the attempt, Water was soon well over the running board, and the occupants pulled up to consider the situation afresh. At this juncture they were overtaken by a dray, the driver of which had pursued the motorists with the object of dissuading' them. However, he was prevailed upon 'to go ahead and pilot the car, and after having removed the fan belt in order to save the magneto from splashes, the motorists followed. The.water, frequently reached up to the axles of the dray, but the car \ eptn°n its Way> and on emerging from the flooded area bore marks which indicated that it had passed through a ..depth of throe feet, Tho car- is an Overland three-seater.
