WRIT ON THE MAINMAST
AMERICAN STEAMER ARRESTED
The American wooden steamer Brox;, ton, at present.discharging coal at Lyt-' telton to the agency of the Blackball CoaloCompany, was .placed under ariest for debt hy Mr. A. H. Holmes, Registrar and Marshal' of- the Admiralty Court, on-Mondoy (says the' Christohurch Press). The arrest was effected by fastening the writ of summons and the warrant to the mainmast. | ■ The Broxton,, which\'is stated to be the largest wooden steamer in commission, is not classed in, Lloyd's R-egister. She is a steamer, of 3385 tons .register, commanded by Captain Swanson. The Broxtofi previously made one trip from Newcastle to Dunedin and one to Lyt-' telfcon. On the last occasion she was delayed "at Newcastle' for 76. days waiting for a cargo: !As-her'articles expired there,.the crew w.exe paid off and a fresh crew engaged. . :Sh'e ha-s almost completed dispharge of her coal cargo here, and is'already taking in-ballast for the return : trip to Newcastle. The effect of -^ arresting the vessel is that she is held on security until an action for debt against the owners is heard, arid the judgment, if !any, is satisfied. The vessel, may be released or bailed out,by "the offering by the owners of suitable bonds for, security oi by the payment'of the amount sued for.
