GEOLOGICAL MATTERS
Tho annual meeting of the Geological section of .the Wellington Philosophical Society was^ held this week. When the general business was completed, papers wore proceeded with. Dr. J. Henderson delivered an abstract of geological survey work in the Kawhia district, and: exhibited a number of specimens collected there. Mr. P. G. Morgan road a paper contributed by Mr. J. Hardcastle, of Timaru, on the origin of the Quartz Drifts in Otago. The paper, advanced the theory that the accumulations of quartz pebbles' are due to the removal of the rock, in> which they were originally embedded, by the action of acids generated by the decay of vegetable matter. which grew luxuriantly during a warm climatic period, in contradistinction to the theories of water and weather denudation. An animated discussion followed. , • ■ ■
The officers of the section for the ensuing year are:—Chairman, Dr. J. A. Thomson; vice-chairman, Mr. H. T. Ferrar; committee, Messrs. Morgan, Uttloy, Lomas, Donovan, and Morwick; secretary, Dr. Cotton. Mr. Ferrar. announced that arrangements "were in hand for a week-end excursion next week to Martinborough for field work. ■
