MEETING OF THE COUNCIL.

The Hutt County Council met yesterday, there being present Councillors J. Barclay (chairman), H. Foley, A. R. Edwards, J, Whiteman, A. M'Kay, ari"d H., D. Atkinson. „ The chairman was appointed to attend a conference regarding the Pakuratahi bridge. . .' . • ■

A cheque for £1411, the amount of the Treasury subsidy on the rates, was received. . ' :

'■The Wairarapa Automobile Association wrote thanking thei council for giving the. association the control of the two miles of fencing on' the Rimutaka Hill.

The Lands and Survey Department wrote stating that the Land Board had refused the request of the council to set aside 20£ acres of Crown land as a recreation reserve at Paekakariki.

It was decided to support the resolution passed by. the Ashburton County Council, protesting against the present high rate of interest and requesting the Prime Minister to try. and obtain the same rate of interest as exists at Home.

A letter was i\ -ieived from the New Zealand Counties' Association, suggesting, 28th September as the date for the next conference.—The chairman was .appointed as the council's delegate to the .conference. ■ '...■'■

Mr. Ci T. Price w^te stating that he and. other settlers interested were prepared to subsidise, to the extent of £500 the improvements on the-Martin's River-road, provided Uiat the Govern ment. would give a similar subsidy. It was decided to ask Mr. Price to pay the amount: into the bank, the ■ Government having agreed to pay in £500. ■
