AN AGENT CHARGED

"i In the Magistrate's Court this morning, before IVfr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., Joseph H. Cornish, for whom Mr. Hannah appeared, pleaded not guilty to a charge of failing to account for £20 received from Henry Hall, on behalf of, Early Brothers. Acting-Chief-Detective Andrews stated that Cornish was employed 'by Early Brothers, and, while so employed, installed a lighting system in the house of Mr. Hall, at Lower ffutt, Mr. Hall had paid Cornish'for the work, but the amount had not been handed on to the firm. Dornish, in a statement" tio the police, had maintained that there.was. due to him by way ■ of' commission an amount about equal to the value of the cheque given him 'by. Mr.yHall.'.:;;;: r Mr.' Hannah submitted! that this, was not a case of .theft at all; it was simply a settlement of accounts. , : -■, Cornish .having given v evidence/ the Magistrate entered a conviction. Accused was further charged with obtaining from Tisdall's, Ltd., £4, by means.of a valueless cheque, and of obtaining: from Thomas E. Mills £10 by the same, means. Evidence, was given by a member of the bank staff at' Blenheim' that from April -last the • accused's cheques, had been sent back. constantly. The cheques with which the charges were concerned were both issued in July. Cornish -said that he knew there' Was not enough money in his account to meet the cheques, but he had hoped that by the time the cheques' were presented he would haye sufficient to meet them. Ero'm one of his inventions he. expected £170 within, the'nert. fortnight, and there was money coming due from two other inventions. .■'■'■.'■■

The Magistrate entered convictions on 1 both charges,, tut, . saying he did rot. want to send the man to prison unless it' was absolutely necessary, he remanded Cornish until to-morrow to enable the probation officer to report. ..';
