THE MAYORALTY

NEGOTIATIONS BREAK DOWN.

Following is the report of the sub-com-mittee appointed at a committee meeting of supporters of the candidature of Councillor Norwood for the city Mayoralty: — "Your committee desires to report as follows:— . -

"The conference was held between three representatives of the following committees—Mr. R. A. Wright, Mr. L. .M'Kenzie, and Mr. C. B. Norwood. After considerable, discussion, it was carried on the motion of a member of Mr. M'Kenzie*3 committee, that three representatives of each committee meet three representatives of the Greater Wellington Electors' Association, with the president of that association as chairman, for the purpose of selecting one of the three candidates mentioned for nomination for the position of Mayor. "The three representatives of these committees met the committee of .the Greater Wellington Electors' Association on Monday, 28th February. Unfortunately, however, the general committees of Mr. Wright and Mr. M'Kenzie could not consent to ■ give their representatives a free hand. The meeting then ended at a deadlock. Your sub-committee explained to the meeting that it had a free hand in the matter, and was desirous that some arrangement should be come, to to avoid the multiplicity of candidates for the Mayoralty. "It is, therefore, with regret that we have to report a breakdown of the whole negotiations in consequence. Your committee, however, suggests that the campaign, in favour of Mr. Norwood's candidature be proceeded wit a immediately and vigorously, and that Mr. Norwood bo asked to take the earliest opportunity of addressing the electors on matters concerning- the municipality?"
