THE PRESENTATION TO GENERAL GODLEY
TO TKE EDITOR. Sir,—l note that. Dr. Thaeker, M.P., has, in a question which he has placed on the Order Paper, attempted to cast Unworthy imputations both on Sir James Allen and General Godley in reference to the sword of honour presented to the latter. ■ '
-■"'' The suggestion that the sword is being paid for by Sir James Allen out of public money is of course without the slightest; foundation. It was purchased by subscription raised by the Mayors of Auckland, Wellington,, Christchurch, andDunedin, and was intended as a recognition of General Godley's services in organising' the defence forces of New Zealand. The presentation was delayed on account of the war, in which General Godley played such a distinguished part. Dr. Thaeker, who is the present Mayor of Christchurch, ought'to be fully aware of the action taken by his. predecessor in this matter.—l am, etc., , \V. H. TRIGGS.. Bth October.
