TOWN HALL TOWER

In sarcastic vein a correspondent signing himself "A Man in the Street," writes in reference to the unsighly scaffolding on the Town Hall tower. The scaffolding, he states, has been in position since before the visit of the Prince of Wales. It detracts from the dignity of the building, and isl a disgrace to/the city. When the matter was referred to the Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke) he stated that very essential repair work was being carried out, but it had been unduly delayed owing to the difficulty in securing material and labour. The ii'on. work on.the tower had deteriorated, and it was decided to replace the iron by sheet copper, which, it was discovered, was almost, unprocurable. .The scaffolding would be removed as soon as possible. With the correspondent he regretted the delay, which had been unavoidable.
