ANNUAL MEETING OF ASTRONO-

MICAL SECTION,

The annual meeting of the Astronomical Section of the Philosophical Society was held last night, Dr. C. E. Adams presiding. The annual report stated that owing to the bad weather and the lack of leisure the work done at the observatory had been reduced. During the year eight papers had been read at meetings to the section. Referring to the observatory the report mentioned that while the building was in fair repair it required painting and the dome dressing. The instrument was in good order, and electric lights had been fitted to the circles and cross wires. Several other alterations had been carried out.

The balance-sheet showed that the cash account had a credit balance of £8 2s 9d, while the Proctor Library Fund showed a credit balance of £99 19s 9d.

The election of officers resulted in la-st year's officers being elected en bloc. Mr. A. C. Gifford read two very interesting papers, one entitled "The Collisions of Planets and Passing Stars," and the other "Professor Pickering's Theory, of Novae." Mr. Mark Chapman, Professor Marsden, and Mr. Westland took part in the discussion which followed.,
