THE MARRIAGE LAWS.
The Marriage Amendment BillTNo, 2) was not proceeded with by the" Hon. J, MacGregor, of Danedin, in the' Legislative. Council yesterday, he. being giy^i permission to postpone the second reading for a week. The" Bill provides that tha name of any bishop, priest, or minister of any Church \?hich denies or questions the validity of marriages 'solemnised-in accordance with the law of New Zealand shall not be placed on the list of officiating ministers. It is further proposed' that any bishop, priest, or .minister o! the Roman Catholic Church shall ba similarly excluded, so long as the i\o Tiemere decree, or the . decree of the Council of Trent referred to therein, continue in force in New Zealand. It is that Mr. MacGregor's desire' is to postpone the Bill until the House of Representatives has dealt finally with the clause added by the Council to the first Marriage Amendment Bill, by which it> was proposed to make it an offence t6 deny or impuga the validity of a lawful marriage. > '
