DOMINION UNIONS.
Legislation to allow the seamen to register one union for the Dominion was asked for by Mr. P. Fraser. (Wellington Central) in the House of Representatives yesterday. Mr. Eraser said that he understood that the Labour Department was not unfavourable to this,-.-and the Chairman of the Labour Bills Committee had stated that seamen were regarded a 6 being on a different footing from other ■workers in this respect because of the nature of their employment. Sir Wm. Herries "said that'if there were the opportunity this session an amendment of. the Arbitration Act might be introduced to provide for • Dominion awards, as was proposed in; 1911, but .as touching Dominion unions the Government considered that it was not desirable with the present labour unrest, to facilitate the formation of Dominion unions which would lead to the "one big union." Mr. Fraser considered, that' this did not apply to the seamen. The Minister said that the Seamen, according to Mr. Young, desired to, have •the one union so that they might., .io'.h with the Australian Seamen's - Union. That would mean the formation of an organisation that would be' capable of paralysing industry in case of trouble.'
