SUBSIDY SYSTEM TO STOP

LONDON, 12th August. Mr. Austen Chamberlain, Chancellor of the Exchequer, announced in the House of Commons that the Government has decided, in the interests of national economy and with a view to hastening the return to normal trade conditions, tr Gild the bread subsidy before the beginning, of another financial year. At present the subsidy is about fivepence on the four-pound loaf. Threepence of this would be transferred from the taxpayer to the consumer next month, and whatever balance remains, according to the price of wheat, would be transferred by the close of the financial vea-r.
