WHITE AUSTRALIA
POLICY MENACED BY JAPAN
A CALL FOR PROMPT ACTION
(UNITED PRESB ASSOCIATION.— COPTRICIHT.) (Received August 11, 10.30 a.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. An article in the Sydney Sun on the "White Australia" policy states that the question whether the principle of the policy of a White Australia is in jeopardy must be finally answered by the end of the year at the Conference in Geneva, when the Australian mandate in the Pacific will be promulgated. It states that secret diplomacy still precludes the public from knowing all that happens between the Chancelleries; but there is the very best reason, for stating that Japan has very decidedly, and upon several occasions, endeavoured to abort the White Australia policy, and will undoubtedly attempt to destroy it again at Geneva, where the policy may be canvassed in a far more detached and academic spirit. There will be a greater number of delegates, with a greater number of votes, which may swing for or against Australia; and once a decision is reached, Australia must either submit or break away from the League of Nations. The article states that unless Ministers are able honestly to affirm that the integrity of the White Australia policy will not be upset at Geneva, a delegation should he despatched to Geneva to urge the claims of the policy.
