WELLINGTON NORTH
MR, J. READ'S CANDIDATURE.
A well-attended meeting, was held by Mr. J. Read, Labour candidate for Wellington North, at Dixon-Willis-street corner last night, Mr. W. Atkinson being chairman. As a contrast between the attitude of candidates on the question of the position of Civil servants. Mr. J. Read pointed out that Mr. Luke had stated "that he <va_ in favour of the Civil servants being represented on Classification Boards." The Labour party was certainly in favour of such a measure of mere justice also, but in addition the Civil servants must recollect that he and his party were committed in their platform to giving the Civil servants full civil and political rights, a thing which had been consistenly denied them by both the Liberal and Reform parties, and advanced no further by their conjoint inaction while a "National" Government. Mr. Read touched on several other matters. At the conclusion of the meeting several questions were asked, and cheers were given for the Labour party and Mr. Read.
