MR. M'KENZIE AT NEWTOWN

Mr. L. M'Kenzie addressed a meeting at Rosson's tea rooms, Newtown, last evening. He traversed the ground covered in his previous addresses, dealing with the urgent need of better educational facilities, and advantages to be gained by nationalising technical schools. He outlined the financial position given in Sir Joseph Ward's speech, and pointed out the needs for increased production to lessen the burden which would otherwise have to fall upon the ratepayer. Cut up the lands and people them ; produce the goods and the markets awaited them. This was the wisest way to reduce the debt per head, said Mr. M'Kenzie. Continuing, he urged the wisdom of opening new coalfields under Government management, and stressed the need of State-owned boats to carry the coal. The candidate referred at length to the needs of increased industrial activity, and quoted the cablegrams from England in support of his argument. After referring to the local requirements and his personal record of public service, the candidate received a hearty vote of thanks and confidence.
